Rafting in Tyrol/Austria 2011 |
|
|
River Inn (Tirol) The river Inn in Austria is the ideal rafting playground. It is also the most popular and significant river for white water sports in the alpine region. Spectacular big wild water without any visible rocks and boulders in between the city of Imst and the village of Haiming where all beginners and intermediate level rafting tours commence. Due to the width of the river and no large obstacles this can be considered a 'safe river' from start to finish. The huge amounts of water flowing down in spring and early summer, creates awesome waves and stoppers, changing your rafting tour into a adventure you will never forget. Following are the sections of the Inn rafted by RTA: |
|
|
This is the classic rafting tour in the region. The majority of our customers begin with this tour, taking them through the magnificent 'Imster George'. Approximately half way into the Tour, between the most spectacular rapids the waters of the River Oetz flows into the River Inn. Depending on the level of the Oetz, water levels can be doubled on the lower section of the tour. One of the most significant sections of the river is the 'Memminger Stopper' a wall of water reaching up to 2m high. The usual route is to miss this hole on river left. However, on request (not for the faint hearted) our guides take you directly through the middle, risking a flip, 'just for the fun of it'. |

Tösens - PrutzThis trip is very similar to the trip on the lower Inn-Imster gorge. Beginning in very calm waters with beautiful scenery. A deep cataract in the Austrian Alps and interesting rock carvings will stay in your memory for a long time. After 20 minutes the river flows into a narrow gorge. The wild water of the middle section can reach grade IV+ especially at high water levels in early summer. Steep waves and huge holes give the crew great excitement. Your raft guide will scream loud " hold on " in front of the hole called 'Flipper' just prior to 'house rock' to make sure you don't take an early swim. From here the river continues as grade III. The trip ends on easy water in the village of Prutz.... |
River data 'Toesens gorge'
upper Inn valley
|
|
From it's source in the upper Inn valley down to Landeck. So far only accessible to Kayak paddlers and professional rafting teams, however the Landeck gorge was recently opened by the local Tyrolean Government for commercial rafting. An impressive section of grade 4-5 white water only a few hundred meters below a Dam released section of river. For approx. 1000 meters everything is demanded from the crew, which was previously learned in the Raft. After this key section of the river comes high waves and rapids passing through the ravine-like landscape which runs parallel to the highway, up to the take-out point in Landeck. |

River Oetz (Ötztaler Ache) The Oetz river is a very steep and powerful glacier river. It is fed by the melting waters of two main glaciers, Rettenbach and Tiefenbach. The level of the river depends on the temperature at the 3000m high glacier area and in the middle of Summer, June, July and August the level of the icy-cold, milk-coffee brown river can rise significantly. It takes approximately 3-4 hours for the waters to travel down the 45km valley from Vent/Soelden to the village of Oetz. Due to the difficulty of the river it is guaranteed to produce high levels of Adrenaline. |

Prior Rafting knowledge is
required before attempting the raging torrents of the River Oetz. A 'training run' is necessary on the River Inn
beforehand! to practice all rescue maneuvers and necessary
commands to ensure the safety of the whole team. Additional
training is necessary for the Power Raft Tour. Key sections on the River Oetz are the 'Slalom Cataract' immediately at the start of the tour, the 'Waldschlucht', |
|
1.5
km of extreme wild water and the 'Constructa' a rapid named
after a German washing machine brand, comprising of three
consecutive big off set stoppers
, potentially each one capable of flipping a raft. A real
challenge for the guides and the crew. It is also possible to
choose the 'chicken run' on river right if necessary. The J&B European-Rafting Championships 1991-1994 took place on the river Oetz in the Soelden gorge were RTA showed there strength in winning 3 x Gold and Bronze medal. Since 2001 new sections of the river Oetz have been opened to Rafting. Most of these sections are WW grade III and recommended as an alternative to the Imster Gorge. |

This river is unique, fed by glacier-waters from the Ischgl and St. Anton skiing resorts. While navigable on a very technical short stretch of the river between the power station at Tobadil and the city of Landeck, offering cascading falls at the 'Sharp-corner', this trip is ideal for a sporty crew. We only use small 12 foot rafts for maximum fun on this 30 minute trip. The River Sanna, host of the 1996 down river canoeing and kayaking world championship is a very technical river. In comparison to the River Oetz, this river has a lower volume of water but due to the gradient of the river offers excellent rapids and lots of excitement to go with it. Therefore the white-water rating and the speed of the water is very high and makes this a spectacular and difficult river.
|
|
| In high flow it develops into a 'raging thunder' and one of the best white water rivers in the region, you have to stay on track 100%. Beginning at the rapid 'sharp corner' we have to navigate a hard right turn staying close to the vertical wall to escape a large fall on river left. This continues into some smaller rapids with big standing waves until we reach the entrance of the next major rapid through the village of Pians. There the river narrows again and flows at high speed toward big boulders, creating holes and shearwaters. Don't get caught! The river passes the 'sharks fin' flowing into the next little section of 'deep green room'. Here the river narrows to a width of about 5 meters just enough to guide the raft through. We head to the last big rapid, the 'Hackl' which was slightly deformed due to high waters in June 1995. Depending on the level, there are three off-set stoppers to navigate. Smaller rapids follow until the raft crosses the last bridge before the take out. | |
